Michael Olise: From Overlooked Academy Talent to Bundesliga Sensation

At just 22 years old, Michael Olise has established himself as one of Europe’s most productive young attackers, completing a rapid rise from overlooked academy prospect to Bundesliga champion and emerging international. Yet alongside his on-field ascent, Olise has developed a reputation for aloofness and detachment that continues to shape public perception of his character. Olise’s journey to the top of European football began modestly. By age 17, Olise was Reading’s youngest first-team starter. His progression earned him a call-up to France’s under-18 national team, though he remained eligible for England, Nigeria and Algeria. Reading teammates later noted that Olise trained with unusual intensity and began to outwork his peers, contrasting sharply with earlier perceptions from his academy years. Yet his social detachment persisted; at one point he unfollowed nearly the entire squad on social media after seeing a favorite musician do the same.

Olise’s breakout came during the 2020–21 Championship season. Across three campaigns with Reading, he produced a string of standout performances marked by long-range goals, set-piece delivery and ball-carrying ability. He was named the Championship’s Young Player of the Year and became widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted players outside the Premier League. Although larger clubs showed interest, Reading’s financial stability and Olise’s desire for gradual progression led him to join Crystal Palace in 2021 after the London club activated his release clause.

At Crystal Palace, Olise’s impact was immediate. Initially used as an impact substitute by manager Patrick Vieira, he recorded a goal or assist nearly every 50 minutes across his first half-season. Vieira eventually made Olise a regular starter after several match-winning contributions, including a free-kick against Manchester United that won Premier League Goal of the Month. Palace fans embraced him quickly, though his quiet demeanor in interviews and muted celebrations became a repeated talking point.

A foot injury disrupted his 2022–23 campaign, and Palace endured a long winless streak that coincided with his absence. In summer 2024, Bayern Munich activated Olise’s £60 million release clause, reuniting him with childhood friend Jamal Musiala. Yet despite his growing résumé, Olise’s understated personality remains a frequent subject of discussion. Bayern teammates, including Thomas Müller, have attempted to lighten his demeanor—famously giving him a celebratory beer shower—and club officials have joked about his quiet interviews.
