The AAF sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, alleging that Omar, who earns a salary of $174,000 per year, is currently in collection proceedings for federally guaranteed student loans.

In the letter, AAF President Thomas Jones expressed serious concerns about what he termed “abuse of office” and “abuse of government loans” by Omar.

According to the group, her financial disclosure forms indicate she owes between $15,001 and $50,000 in outstanding student loan debt, which is backed by the federal government.

Jones emphasized that Omar’s default would ultimately shift the financial burden onto U.S. taxpayers, stating, “The fact that someone making $174,000 as a Member of Congress cannot pay their student loans is unconscionable and embarrassing.”

The AAF went further by alleging that Omar has used her position to exert pressure on federal agencies to avoid collection on her loans.

Jones claimed, “Adding insult to injury, there are credible claims that she is using her influence as a Member of Congress to bully the Department of Education into not collecting the past-due payments.

” To support their claims, the AAF has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to obtain any correspondence between Omar and the Department of Education regarding her loans.

The letter urged Speaker Johnson to take decisive action by instructing the Chief Administrative Officer of the House of Representatives to impound Omar’s congressional salary and direct it to Nelnet, the servicer of her federal student loan, until her payments are current.

As of now, Omar’s office has not responded to requests for comment regarding these allegations.
